Peripheral Artery Diseases
Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease. It causes major arterial obstructions due to blood clots in important arteries in the body, such as the arteries that give blood to the heart and brain. It is also responsible for limb amputation and physical disability for intermittent leg weakness or limping when a person suffers from painful walking. When this problem worsens, pain can be present even at rest.

Circulatory, arterial insufficiency can cause complications such as ischemia, painful ulcers in the leg, the ankle, foot or both feet, with the result being infection and possible partial or complete amputation.
Diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis are the major causes of non-traumatic limb amputations in the world. The state of the art in limb rescue includes catheterization of the peripheral arteries, with the aim of circulatory restoration using percutaneous treatments such as balloons, stents or catheters designed for clot removal. These techniques can also be applied to other arterial obstructions such as renal artery obstruction and mesenteric obstruction (bowel ischemia) among others.
Erectile dysfunction is another very frequent manifestation of peripheral artery disease.
