Bariatric Embolization

Bariatric arterial embolization is a relatively new procedure used in the treatment of severe obesity. A number of studies have been conducted, with results showing tremendous success in small samples of patients. The success rates are in the range of 95%, with a high of 100% in some studies.

This procedure is conducted on an outpatient basis and takes approximately 1 hour. Patients are able to leave the clinic a few hours later following observation. A small incision is made in the wrist, through which a catheter is passed via the artery to the stomach. Once there, microscopic particles are injected that decrease blood flow and limit the secretion of Ghrelin, one of the hormones that control hunger. The result is a dramatic decrease in hunger levels and the initiation of weight loss. Follow-up studies have demonstrated that bariatric embolization is safe and effective in sustaining weight loss.

Estimates indicate that there are approximately 1.2 billion individuals around the world who are morbidly obese. Complications of obesity are severe, including diabetes, cancer, hypertension, and stroke among others. Bariatric embolization offers a minimally invasive option for treating morbid obesity and improving the quality of life for those suffering from this condition.
